Yonkovic Named Northwest Wrestling Coach

Brett Yonkovic has been hired as the new Head Boys Wrestling coach at Waukee Northwest High School.  Yonkovic will replace longtime coach Chad Vollmecke.  Vollmecke has resigned from coaching to take an administrative position at Northwest High School.

Vollmecke built an elite level program at Waukee High School before starting the Northwest High School program in the fall of 2021.  Northwest has enjoyed tremendous success in its first four years as a program, placing in the top 6 in the team standings at the State traditional tournament all four years, including a state runner-up finish in 2022. During that time the Wolves crowned 6 individual champions and had 26 podium finishes.  Northwest also has two 3rd place finishes and a 6th place finish at the State Dual tournament.

Since joining the staff at Waukee High School in 2015 and following Vollmecke to Northwest, Yonkovic has been an integral part of the success of both programs.  He’s been a part of 91 state qualifiers and 57 state place-winners including 11 state champions.

A native of Manchester, Yonkovic wrestled at West Deleware High School and then was a part of 8 National Championship wrestling teams at Wartburg College between the dual and traditional tournaments.  He will assume duties as the head coach at Northwest this spring.
