Wolves Golf Recap – Fall 2024
While individual scores were celebrated, the team as a whole held their own spotlight this season. The Wolves started off hot with two 1st place finishes to start the year, and through 13 meets, the Wolves never once finished below 5th place, having four total 1st place team finishes with a season-best and school record score of 5 under par 283 at the Cedar Falls Tiger Varsity Golf Invitational. They ended the season with a 92-21-1 record (19-8 in conference play) and finished 3rd in the CIML and 6th overall in the state standings. A 4th place finish in districts was just short of a state appearance but gave the Wolves a glimpse of what they can be. Thank you to the seniors Remick Elfers, Zachary Clausen, Luke McRobbie, Jett Sellner, Bryce Taylor, and Zach Tope for the dedication and work they contributed to the growth of the Wolves Golf Program.
Wolves by the Numbers
Junior Blake Cronin led the Wolves with a best score of 68 through 18 holes and a school record scoring average of 71.31 and an adjusted scoring average of 71.97. He was a top-5 finisher in 9 of 13 meets, including three 1st-place finishes, and was recognized as 1st Team All-State for the 2nd year in a row. In addition to Blake, Junior Landry Vogelaar was recognized as 2nd team All-State performer. Landry notched a 1st place finish in his season’s best finish at the Briarwood Club of Ankeny. The team play outstanding golf all season with 6 players averaging less than 80 per round (Cronin, Vogelaar, Remick Elfers, Zach Clausen, Zach Petsche, and Kohen Essing) and finished with 2 new school records of 294.08 (18 Hole Scoring Average) and 296.72 (Adjusted Scoring Average). These scoring averages were good enough for 3rd in the State during the regular season.
What’s next?
The Wolves have a bright future ahead of them as they return six varsity golfers, including four of their top 5 performers from this past season. Blake Cronin consistently stayed at the top of the state rankings and finished in the top five in the state in 18-hole average, 18-hole adjusted average, and combined adjusted average. Vogelaar and Petsche will join Cronin as the veteran-led Wolves team looks to use their experience to their advantage. While Kohen Essing had only seven 18-hole rounds, compared to the other’s 13, Essing is only a sophomore and looks to help lead the Wolves next season. The other returning golfers who competed in at least one round of 18 include sophomores Grant Sorrel and Drake Essing. This is an important offseason for the boys as they seem to be one offseason away from a magical season.
