Northwest Winter Athletic Teams Shine
Northwest athletic teams enjoyed their most successful winter season in 2024-2025. Northwest athletes competed in seven sanctioned sports and brought home impressive hardware in each of them.
The Northwest-RRW Girls Wrestling team won the Large School State Team championship in February. During the season, the girls went undefeated in duals including their second consecutive “The Clash” National Duals title in Wisconsin. They won CIML regular season and tournament titles, along with a Regional championship that qualified 10 girls to the state tournament. At State, 9 wrestlers made the podium, including a third straight individual title for Katie Biscoglia and a runner-up finish for Calista Rodish. Third place finishes from Naomi Templeman and Reece Baxter, a fourth place finish from Cassidy McCallister, a fifth place finish from Natalie Keller, and 7th place finishes from Izzy Duncan, Ellie Hancock, and Edie Collins rounded out the team scoring.
The Boys Swim team went unbeaten in duals to win the CIML regular season championship. They won the CIML meet championship and added a District team championship, qualifying athletes in all 11 events for the state meet. The team’s performance at the District meet won the State Team PowerPoint Championship. At the State meet, Dylan Alt won the 100 Backstroke and placed second in the 100 Butterfly to lead the Wolves. Parker Scuffham placed in 4 events and Leon Bykov, Jacob Wieland, Ethan Hales, Tyler Tatman, Jacob Tatman and Luka Fisher all scored valuable team points to secure a 5th place team finish for Northwest.
The Boys Wrestling team placed third at the State Dual tournament. The Wolves defeated Johnston in the quarterfinal round before falling to #1 Southeast Polk in the State semifinals. The team rebounded to defeat #2 Waverly Shell Rock in the 3rd place match. Northwest then won a District team championship and qualified 12 wrestlers to the traditional State tournament. At the State meet, the Wolves were led by Abe Parker, Henry Mohr, Carew Christensen and Joey Cahill who all stood on the podium. Grayson Manning, Hayden Hutt, Ben Gallagher, Lincoln Hutt, Gabe Rubino, Bryce Williams, and Brayden Williams all score valuable team points contributing to the team’s 6th place finish.
Several Northwest bowlers made big contributions to the combined Waukee and Northwest Girls and Boys bowling teams. The Boys team placed 4th in the State, losing to Cedar Rapids Prairie in the 3rd place match. At the individual state tournament, Northwest’s Ethan Biggerstaff was the state runner-up, and Luke Barnard finished 6th individually. The Girls placed third in the state as a team, defeating Waterloo West in their final match. Individually Northwest’s Katie Derdowski placed 14th, and Allison Pettitt finished in 17th place to lead the combined Waukee/Northwest team.
The Northwest Girls Basketball team won a school record 20 games en route to a State semifinal appearance. The Wolves were ranked third in Class 5A for almost the entire season and qualified for the state tournament by defeating Ankeny in a regional final. Northwest defeated Cedar Rapids Prairie in the State quarterfinal round before falling to #2 Dowling in the State semifinals. Romey Croatt earned first team all-conference and All State honors. Vana Bilic, Cassidy Danburg, and Sadie McCann received all-conference recognition.
The Boys basketball team capped off an unprecedented winter sports season for Northwest with State Runner-Up finish. The Wolves breezed through Substate play winning by an average of 34 points. Northwest defeated Sioux City East 79-46 to advance to the state tournament for the third time in four seasons as a school. After defeating Cedar Rapids Kennedy in the State quarterfinal round, the Wolves defeated top-seeded Cedar Falls 57-49 to reach the state title game for the second time in three years. Northwest lost to Valley in the championship game. Bode Goodman and Peyton McCollum received first team All State recognition, while Colin Rice and Landon Davis were second team All State selections. All four along with Mack Heitland earned all-conference honors.
