Northwest Boys Cross Country Season Recap 2024

A veteran-led Wolves team ran wild this year, setting new personal bests, records, and standards. To start the season, every varsity runner set a personal record or course best to start the season off strong.  The Wolves stayed consistent throughout the year, having multiple top-three team finishes, and saved their best for the last part of the season, finishing 2nd at the CIML with 83 points and 2nd in Districts with a season-best 74 team points  At the front of the pack this year were senior Zach Janulewicz and junior Kellen Tuyls as they finished as number 1 and number 2 on the team in nearly every meeting. Until the end of the season, junior Ayden Gabrielson led the team at the district meet with a 5th-place finish, and Zack followed him in 9th and Kellen in 11th. This was good enough to send all three of the runners to the state meet. A 7th place finish at state was good for the 2nd highest finish at state.

Records, PRs, and Awards

In Zack’s final season with the Wolves, he set his PR at the Bobcat invite with a time of 15:35.2, and he also earned the Wolf award in the race and finished the season with 2nd Team All-conference recognition.  Kellen Tuyls’ junior year also had his PR in the Bobcat invite at 15:37.8; he finished the year with a Wolf award in the Conference meet and a 1st team All-Conference recognition. Zack and Kellen etch themselves in the record books as they take the top two spots in the record book for the best time. Ayden Gabrielson’s Junior year also did not disappoint, as he was awarded the Wolf Award at the district meet, where he punched his ticket to a state appearance. Ayden was recognized with a 2nd Team All-Conference honors as well.

Looking Forward

The season comes to an end with a lot to look forward to. With a senior class setting the standard, the Junior and Sophomore classes look to continue the success. The returning Gabrielson and Tuyls will look to lead the team alongside junior letter winners Roy Verastegui, Zak Shlomi, and Adam Ruehling, as they are hungry to improve. With a lot of time between now and next season, the boys look forward to besting their times and running into next season with the ability to put up even better numbers than this past season.
