Guess Takes New Collegiate Coaching Role
Long time Waukee High School and now Waukee Northwest girls basketball head coach Chris Guess has announced his retirement from both teaching and coaching effective at the conclusion of the school year. One of the most successful coaches in the large school 5-player era, Guess compiled a 488-217 career record, leading his teams to 15 state tournament appearances and two state championships. His Waukee High School program was a model of excellence and consistency qualifying for the state tournament 13 times in 14 years. During a 12-year stretch, his teams never left the IGHSAU “top ten” state rankings.
Through the years Coach Guess received numerous honors and awards including Regional and State Coach of the Year. He received the IGHSAU Golden Plaque of Distinction in 2021 and last April was named as a finalist for the National High School Coaches Association, National Basketball Coach of the Year. Guess was inducted into the Iowa Girls Coaches Association, Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame last summer.
Known for his work ethic and high energy, Guess made a lasting positive impact on hundreds of female athletes. The search for his replacement will begin immediately. Guess will continue his coaching career as an assistant coach on the Northwest Missouri State Women’s basketball staff.
